Pergolas and shade structures with proportions that suit the house
A good pergola does two jobs. It throws the right amount of shade at the right time of day, and it looks like it was always meant to be there. Levi designs and builds custom pergolas in Carlsbad and North County San Diego with the eye of a trained architect and the hands of someone who cuts every joint himself.
Freestanding or attached, over a deck, a patio, a spa, or a front entry, each pergola is drawn to scale first so the posts, beams, and rafters are in proportion to each other and to your home.

What It Covers
What pergola and outdoor structure work covers.
Not sure your project fits? Ask. If it is wood, stone, or the yard around them, Levi will tell you straight whether he is the right person for it.
Describe your project- Freestanding pergolas over decks, patios, and lounge areas
- Attached pergolas and patio covers tied properly into the house

- Rafter and purlin spacing tuned to the shade you actually want
- Privacy screens, lattice panels, and planter walls as part of the structure
- Rebuilding a weathered or rotting pergola on a new footing

How Levi Works
Shade is designed, not guessed.
The difference between a pergola that looks right and one that looks like a kit is almost always proportion and joinery. Levi works both out before the lumber arrives.
Track the sun
Where the shade falls at noon in July is different from five in the afternoon in October. Levi looks at the orientation of the space and how you use it, then sets the rafter direction and spacing to put shade where you sit when you sit there.
Draw the proportions
Post size, beam depth, rafter spacing, and overhang are drawn to scale against the house. A pergola with skinny posts and a heavy beam reads wrong from across the yard. You see the drawing before you see the lumber.
Detail the connections
Posts on concrete footings with standoff bases so the wood never sits in water. Beams through-bolted or lapped, not just screwed. Rafters notched to sit on the beams. The connections are the craft, and they are decided in advance.
Finish for the long haul
Edges eased, end grain sealed, hardware chosen so it will not streak the wood. Stained, painted, or left natural depending on the species and the look you want, with care notes so it stays that way.
Materials
Built from what holds up by the coast.
A pergola lives entirely in the weather. Species, hardware, and finish are chosen for sun and salt air, not for the showroom.
Western red cedar
The classic pergola wood. Light, straight, naturally rot-resistant, and it takes stain beautifully. The go-to for most custom pergola construction in North County.
Douglas fir, kiln-dried
Stronger than cedar for long beams and wider spans. Needs a good finish and maintenance near the coast, so it is used where strength matters more than low upkeep.
Redwood
Rot-resistant with a warm color, in the same family as cedar for outdoor use. Chosen when its tone suits the house or when heart-grade stock is available.
Painted or stained finish
A solid color like the deep charcoal on recent projects hides weathering and ties into the house trim. A semi-transparent stain shows the grain and asks for a recoat every few years.
Hot-dip galvanized and stainless hardware
Post bases, through-bolts, and screws that will not rust and streak the wood. Ordinary zinc hardware does not last this close to the ocean.
Concrete footings with standoff bases
Every post sits on a footing and a metal base that lifts the end grain off the concrete. Posts set in dirt or flat on a slab are the number one reason pergolas rot from the bottom.

Planning
Decisions that shape a pergola.
- Freestanding or attached. Attached pergolas need a proper ledger and flashing at the house and are sometimes treated differently by the city. Freestanding structures avoid both, at the cost of two more posts.
- How much shade. Tighter rafter spacing or a second layer of purlins gives more shade and more structure to look at. Open spacing is lighter and lets more winter sun through.
- Height. Too low feels like a ceiling; too high throws shade onto the neighbor's yard. Eight to nine feet to the underside of the beam is a common sweet spot, adjusted for the house.
- What goes under it. A dining table, a spa, an outdoor kitchen, and a pair of loungers each want a different footprint. Size the structure to the use.
- Lighting and power. If you want string lights, a fan, or a heater, plan the conduit before the posts go up.
- Permits. Size and attachment decide whether a pergola needs a permit in Carlsbad and nearby cities. Levi will tell you early which applies.

Questions

How much shade does a pergola actually provide?
It depends on rafter spacing, rafter depth, and orientation. An open pergola with rafters a foot apart might give you fifty to sixty percent shade at midday and much more in the late afternoon when the sun is low and the rafters block it edge-on. Levi designs the spacing for when you actually use the space, and a second layer of purlins or a slatted panel can add more.
Should the pergola attach to the house or stand on its own?
Attached pergolas save two posts and can feel like an extension of the room. Freestanding pergolas avoid cutting into stucco, avoid the flashing details at the wall, and can be placed exactly where the shade is needed. On many North County homes freestanding is the cleaner choice, but Levi looks at each house before recommending.
What wood is best for a pergola near the coast?
Cedar is the most common choice for good reason: it is naturally rot-resistant, stable, and takes finish well. Redwood is similar. Douglas fir is stronger for long spans but needs a solid finish and more upkeep. The hardware matters as much as the wood this close to the ocean.
Can you rebuild my old pergola instead of replacing it?
Sometimes. If the posts are sound and only the rafters have weathered, replacing the top is reasonable. If the posts are rotting at the base, which is common when they were set in concrete or dirt, a rebuild on proper footings is the honest fix. Levi will probe the structure and tell you which you are looking at.
Do I need a permit for a pergola in Carlsbad?
Small freestanding structures often do not, and larger or attached ones often do. Rules differ between Carlsbad, Oceanside, Encinitas, and the inland cities. Levi will tell you up front what your design requires.
How long will a cedar pergola last?
With posts kept off the ground, end grain sealed, and a refresh of the finish every few years, a cedar pergola in North County can last for decades. Most failures start at the base of the posts or at unsealed joints, which is exactly where Levi spends the detailing time.
