Custom decks, pergolas and wood restoration in Vista
Including Shadowridge, Downtown Vista.
Working in Vista
Vista is the first inland city northeast of Carlsbad, about fifteen to twenty minutes from Levi's home base along Highway 78 or the surface streets. The climate changes on that drive. Vista sits in rolling hills a few miles back from the coast, so it gets more sun and warmer afternoons than Carlsbad, and the marine layer burns off earlier. For exterior wood, that trades salt for UV.
The housing is just as varied. Downtown Vista and the older neighborhoods around it have homes from the mid-century and earlier on generous lots, some with mature trees, old fences, and original wood porches. Shadowridge and the other planned communities from the 1980s and 1990s have stucco homes with patio covers, balconies, and sloped side yards, often governed by an HOA. The hills mean a lot of terraced yards, which is where retaining walls, steps, and decks that make a slope usable come in. Levi designs for the lot you have, not the flat one in the catalog.
Good to know in Vista
- Sun, not salt. Inland exposure means strong UV and bigger day-to-night swings. Pergolas earn their keep here, and finishes with real UV inhibitors matter more than corrosion-proof hardware.
- Sloped lots. Many Vista yards are terraced or steep. Decks, steps, and low retaining walls are often the way to make the space usable, and they need proper footings and drainage.
- HOA communities. Shadowridge and several newer developments have architectural review for visible changes. Levi can produce drawings that make approval straightforward.
- Permits. Vista handles building permits through its Community Development department. Check with the city's Building Division at vista.gov for decks, attached covers, retaining walls over a certain height, and structural repairs.

Questions
Working with Levi in Vista
Is Vista too far from Carlsbad for a small repair?
Not usually. Vista is a short drive from Carlsbad. Send a photo and the cross streets and Levi will tell you when he can be out that way.
What shade structure works best for an inland backyard?
For a yard that gets full afternoon sun, a pergola with tighter rafter spacing or a partial solid section gives real shade without boxing in the space. Levi works out the orientation and spacing for your yard so the shade falls where you sit.
Can you build a deck on a sloped yard?
Yes. A deck is often the simplest way to get a level outdoor room on a slope. It needs proper footings, a frame designed for the grade, and sometimes a permit. Levi will look at the slope and talk through options, including steps and low walls where they help.
