Pergolas & Shade

How much shade does a pergola really give, and how do rafter spacing and direction change it?

Short answer

A pergola with rafters set on edge and spaced close together can block most of the direct sun at midday and even more in late afternoon. Rafter depth, spacing and direction control it. Rafters running north to south cast wide shadows when the sun is low in the west, which is when Carlsbad patios need it. Rafters running east to west shade better around noon and in winter. A second layer of purlins across the top lets you tune the shade to the hours you sit outside.

Shade is geometry, not guesswork

A pergola rafter is a board on edge. When the sun is straight overhead, the shadow it casts is only as wide as the board is thick. As the sun drops toward the horizon, the shadow stretches across the ground until the gaps between rafters close up. That is why a pergola that feels thin at noon can be fully shaded by four in the afternoon.

Three variables set the result: how deep the rafters are, how far apart they sit, and which direction they run. Depth and spacing determine how low the sun has to get before shadows overlap. Direction determines at which time of day that happens.

Carlsbad's sun, roughly

We sit near 33 degrees north latitude. Around the summer solstice, the midday sun is about 80 degrees above the horizon, nearly overhead. Around the winter solstice it is closer to 33 degrees, low in the southern sky. In between, the sun rises in the northeast and sets in the northwest in summer, southeast and southwest in winter.

That means summer midday sun comes almost straight down through a pergola, and only closely spaced or doubled rafters stop it. Summer afternoon sun arrives from the west and northwest at a low angle, and rafters that run north to south catch it beautifully. Winter sun stays low and southern all day, so east-west rafters do most of the work then.

Orientation rules of thumb

For a patio you use on summer afternoons and evenings, run the rafters north to south. The low western sun hits the sides of the rafters and the shadows stretch across the gaps. This is the most common request in North County, where the warm hours are late afternoon after the marine layer burns off.

For a dining spot you use at lunch, or a space you want warmer in winter, run them east to west. Midday shadows spread to the north, and the low winter sun is blocked more fully.

If you cannot choose, add purlins. A second, lighter layer of boards running perpendicular across the rafters shades in both directions. Spacing the purlins tightly, a few inches apart, gives dense dappled shade at any hour.

Depth and spacing in practice

Deeper rafters cast longer shadows for the same spacing. A two-by-eight on edge shades far more than a two-by-four flat, and it looks more substantial. The trade is weight on the beams and the frame.

Spacing is the easiest lever to tune. Rafters at sixteen inches on center read airy and let a lot of midday sun through. Twelve inches feels balanced. Eight inches or less with purlins on top approaches the feel of a slatted roof.

On the custom deck and pergola project, we set the rafters and purlins tight enough to cast dense shade over the lounge at midday while the morning and evening light still filters through. The homeowners wanted a place to sit in the afternoon without squinting, and the geometry delivered that without a solid roof.

A simple test before you build

Stand on the patio at the hour you most want shade, in the season you most want it, and look at where the sun is. Hold a board on edge in each direction and watch the shadow. That five-minute exercise tells you more than any chart.

Then decide what you are willing to give up. More shade means less sky and a darker room inside. We usually aim for the pergola to shade the seating fully at the key hour and let light through the rest of the day, so the space feels like a garden room rather than a carport.

Related questions

Will a pergola shade the table at noon in July?

Only partly, unless the rafters are deep and close, or you add purlins or a shade panel. Noon summer sun in Carlsbad is nearly overhead. Most homeowners find that afternoon shade matters more, and that is where a pergola excels.

Which way should pergola rafters run for afternoon shade?

North to south. The low western sun hits the rafter sides and the shadows stretch to fill the gaps between them, so the patio shades up as the afternoon goes on.

Do deeper rafters really make a difference?

Yes. Shadow length grows with rafter depth, so a deeper rafter closes the gaps sooner as the sun drops. Deeper members also look more substantial and resist sagging over longer spans.
